The Fall of the Serbian Empire

A Decades-Long Process

The Serbian Empire, a medieval empire in the Balkans, emerged from the medieval Serbian kingdom in the fourteenth century. However, the empire's collapse was a protracted process that spanned decades and culminated in the late 14th century.

The Death of Emperor Stefan Uroš V

The decline of the Serbian Empire began with the death of Emperor Stefan Uroš V in 1371. The childless emperor's demise left a power vacuum that led to internal strife and territorial fragmentation.

Internal Divisions and External Threats

Following Stefan Uroš V's death, the Serbian Empire faced internal divisions and external threats. Noble families competed for power, weakening the central authority. Additionally, the Ottoman Turks posed a growing threat to the empire's borders.

Gradual Collapse

Over the next decades, the Serbian Empire gradually lost territory to the Ottomans. By the end of the 14th century, the empire had disintegrated, with its former territories divided among various regional powers.
