Phillips was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 1999 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut with the Indians in 2006 and played for the team until 2012. Phillips was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2012 and played for the team until 2016. He signed with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 and played for the team until 2019. Phillips signed with the Red Sox in 2020.

Phillips was a key member of the Red Sox team that won the 2018 World Series. He hit .288 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs in the regular season and .313 with 3 home runs and 14 RBIs in the postseason. Phillips was also a Gold Glove finalist in 2018.
